Enema
An enema is a medical procedure that involves the administration of drugs or substances to clear the bowel or the injection of liquid into the intestine through the rectum.
Gas Ventilation Scintigraphy
A gas ventilation scintigraphy is a diagnostic imaging test of lung ventilation with radioactive noble gases during breathing maneuvers, e.g. with krypton (81mKr) or xenon (133Xe).
The radioactive gas is administered by a mask and requires a special delivery and trapping system (gas trap). The radioactivity in the lungs is measured with a gamma camera and is subsequently evaluated.
The use of krypton or xenon gases involves problems like the relatively short half-lives (about 15-30 seconds) and relatively high costs of xenon and krypton. The short half-life requires that the scan is performed directly after administration of the gas. In addition, the gaseous radiopharmaceutical is expelled from the body almost quantitatively within a few minutes of completing the study.
A ventilation scintigraphy combined with a pulmonary perfusion scintigraphy is highly sensitive for the detection of pulmonary embolism.
Radioactive noble gases are widely used as a ventilation agent to diagnose pulmonary embolism. However, 81mKr and 133Xe are rare and expensive, which limits their continuous availability. Tc99m-Technegas can be an alternative ventilation agent with the advantage of being less expensive and available daily.

Gastrografin®
Gastrografin® is a water-soluble iodinated radiopaque contrast agent for x-ray examinations of the esophagus, stomach, proximal small intestine, colon and is also used for bowel visualization in abdominal computer tomograms.
The high opacification and delineation after oral or rectal administration is caused by a low absorption of the intact gastrointestinal tract. However, visualization of the distal small bowel is generally unsatisfactory, since the hypertonicity of the medium causes intraluminal diffusion of water with subsequent dilution.

Iodide-Induced Hyperthyroidism
Iodinated contrast media contain small amounts of free iodide. Too much free iodide in the blood may cause hyperthyroidism in patients at risk, but contrast medium induced thyrotoxicosis is rare. The free iodide may also interfere with nuclear medicine diagnostic tests and treatment. However, iodinated contrast agents do not affect thyroid function tests (e.g., T3, T4, TSH) in patients with a normal thyroid.
Guidelines were prepared by the 'Contrast Media Safety Committee of the European Society of Urogenital Radiology' and discussed on the Tenth European Symposium on Urogenital Radiology in September 2003.
Tests of thyroid function before the injection of contrast agents may only be indicated in areas with dietary iodine deficiency. Patients with Graves' disease, multinodular goiter with thyroid autonomy, especially elderly and patients who lives in areas of iodine deficiency are at risk to develop thyrotoxicosis after IV contrast medium and should be monitored by endocrinologists after contrast enhanced CT exams. Prophylaxis may offer some protection in selected high-risk individuals but is not generally recommended.
The free iodide of iodinated contrast agents interferes with thyroidal iodide uptake and impedes diagnostic thyroid scintigraphy and radio-iodine treatment of thyroid malignancies for 2 months after administration.
Isovist®
Isovist® is a nonionic x-ray contrast agent. Isovist® is suitable for intrathecal applications for example CT myelography, cisternography, the evaluation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation and for use in other body cavities. Opacification is directly visible after administration of Iotrolan to the spinal subarachnoid space and various open body cavities. Isovist® flows with the CSF through the arachnoid villi into the venous blood.
