(FNH) The focal nodular hyperplasia is a hypervascular, benign focal liver lesion. Various liver imaging techniques are common to differentiate FNH from a malign lesion, such as contrast enhanced ultrasound, MRI or a CT multi phase study.

Gastrografin® is a water-soluble iodinated radiopaque contrast agent for x-ray examinations of the esophagus, stomach, proximal small intestine, colon and is also used for bowel visualization in abdominal computer tomograms.
The high opacification and delineation after oral or rectal administration is caused by a low absorption of the intact gastrointestinal tract. However, visualization of the distal small bowel is generally unsatisfactory, since the hypertonicity of the medium causes intraluminal diffusion of water with subsequent dilution.

Hypaque 76 is a radiopaque contrast agent supplied as a 76 percent sterile aqueous solution providing 66 percent (w/v) diatrizoate meglumine and 10 percent (w/v) diatrizoate sodium.

GE Healthcare has discontinued Hypaque 76 for unknown reasons.

Ionic dimers are used as x-ray contrast agents. They are formed by joining 2 ionic monomers and eliminating 1 carboxyl group and contain 6 iodine atoms for every 2 particles in solution (CM ratio=3).
Ionic dimers have an intermediate osmolarity, intermediate viscosity and an intermediate hydrophilicity between that of ionic and nonionic monomers. The only commercially available ionic dimer is ioxaglate (Hexabrix). Ioxaglate is used primarily for peripheral arteriography.
