Baryon
Baryons are a group of elementary particles. The heavier particles such as protons and neutrons belong to these baryons. Usually a baryon is made of three quarks; the more exotic ones consist out of four quarks and one anti-quark. [Don't Panic]
CT Number
(Computed tomography number) The CT number is a selectable scan factor based on the Hounsfield scale. Each elemental region of the CT image (pixel) is expressed in terms of Hounsfield units (HU) corresponding to the x-ray attenuation (or tissue density).
CT numbers are displayed as gray-scale pixels on the viewing monitor. White represents pixels with higher CT numbers (bone). Varying shades of gray are assigned to intermediate CT numbers e.g., soft tissues, fluid and fat. Black represents regions with lower CT numbers like lungs and air-filled organs.
Cerebral Metabolic Imaging
Cerebral metabolic imaging can be accomplished with positron emission computer tomography (PET), magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and functional magnetic resonance imaging.
PET uses positron-emitting radioisotopes of elements with short half-live such as fluorine-18, oxygen-15, nitrogen-13, and carbon-11 as tracers to image and to measure the cerebral metabolism.
Electron Capture
(K-capture) An unstable atom with too many protons in the nucleus, and not enough energy to emit a positron, reaches a stable state in the way, that one proton captured an electron from the atom's inner shell (K-shell) and change to a neutron. A neutrino is emitted from the atoms nucleus by this process. The atomic mass of the atom is unchanged, but the decreased number of protons transformed the atom to a different element.
Electron Positron Annihilation
When an electron collides with its antiparticle, a positron, causing both elements to be completely destroyed and in most cases resulting in the emission of gamma rays.
